Smithsonian Magazine just named Mill Valley in its 2012 list of The 20 Best Small Towns in America. In fact, it came in fifth, based mostly on its stunning natural setting and its unique individual culture. I have long considered Mill Valley one of the best towns to live in because of its great public schools, charming downtown area, gorgeous Mt. Tamalpais views, and the hiking trails right out the back door of so many homes. Not to mention that Muir Woods and Stinson Beach are its closest neighbors to the west; a very short drive—or spectacular hike or bike ride away!
Yes, of course Mill Valley has its drawbacks, of course; it’s an expensive place to live, and the traffic gets slow a couple times a day. But there is nowhere else on earth that can offer everything Mill Valley does, all within a 20-minute commute of San Francisco. Nice to see it recognized by Smithsonian!
