Where to Take Mom for Mother’s Day in the Bay Area

|April 28, 2017

Mother’s Day comes around once a year and offers the perfect excuse to shower our moms with love and affection. Though we may sometimes forget to remind them just how much we care about them day-to-day, on May 14th we have a chance to go completely overboard (not recommended if you choose one of the Mother’s Day cruises!).

This year, take advantage of our city and explore some of its most amazing restaurants and attractions with your mom. Some of them you’ll recognize — like the San Francisco Zoo and The Conservatory of Flowers — but others may surprise you. From special events and 5Ks to gardens and museums, everyone is celebrating Bay Area moms this year. So join in, tell your mom you love her and, most importantly, have fun!

1. Start with Brunch

Brunch is a Mother’s Day classic. Well, it’s actually a spring, summer and weekend classic, but Mother’s Day is a great excuse to participate! Many San Francisco restaurants celebrate with special brunches, festive treats and prix fixe menus. To narrow your brunch search, check out our guide to the Bay Area’s best!

For something extra special, join The Culinary Dude for Kid Made Mother’s Day Brunch on May 14 in San Rafael. After your kids spend time in the kitchen, you’ll be treated to breakfast egg casserole, roasted breakfast potatoes, butternut squash bread pudding and more tasty treats!

2. Opt outside

San Francisco is celebrating Bay Area moms with plenty of opportunities to get outside this year.

The Mother’s Day Marina Green 5K & Kids Run is a flat, fast and scenic 5K run along Crissy Field on Sunday, May 14. Start with the 5K at 9 a.m. Then, beginning at 9:45, there’s a free, half-mile Kids Race designed for children ages 12 and under.

Or join the wildlife on Sunday at the Mother’s Day Bike About at San Francisco Zoo. Spend the morning on a leisurely, docent-led cycling tour through the Zoo and finish up with a relaxing continental breakfast. You’ll get to explore on your own bike before the public is admitted for the day!

3. Learn something new

San Francisco has some of the best museums in the country and Mother’s Day is the ideal opportunity to take advantage and learn something new with your mom!

On the Friday before Mother’s Day, Aquarium of the Bay is offering free admission for moms with purchase of a child’s ticket ($14.95). Stop by on May 12 to learn about the Bay’s local marine life and get up close and personal. Then come back on Sunday for special Moms of the Bay presentations throughout the day!

The Exploratorium invites the whole family to their Mother’s Day Free Day on Sunday. From 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., you can explore the museum for free, make paper flowers at a hands-on workshop and dance to Mariachi music!

4. Get on the water

Combine your love for the Bay with your love of crafted food! Depart from San Francisco or Berkeley on May 14 for one of four Hornblower Mother’s Day cruises.

The Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch Cruise takes off from Doubletree Marina in Berkeley at 10 a.m. This two-hour event features a brunch buffet, live entertainment, free-flowing champagne and bottomless mimosas! If you and your mom aren’t early risers, opt for the 2 p.m. lunch cruise.

Take off from San Francisco for Mother’s Day Brunch on the San Francisco Belle. Along with a brunch buffet and bottomless mimosas, you can relax to the sounds of a live DJ!

The Mother’s Day Premier Champagne Brunch is a more upscale option. Take off at 11:30 a.m. from Pier 3 for two and a half hours of live jazz, brunch and free-flowing Chateau St. Michelle Champagne, Irish Coffees, Bloody Marys, Screwdrivers, mimosas and more!

If you’re a fan of the Bay at sunset (who isn’t?), choose the San Francisco Mother’s Day Dinner Cruise! You will get to enjoy a four-course seated meal, full bar, soothing live music and unforgettable views of San Francisco’s sparkling city lights.

5. Take in some culture

San Francisco is an arts and cultural destination year round which makes holidays much easier to celebrate.

This Mother’s Day, take your mom to see the internationally-famous musical, Hamilton, at the Orpheum Theater. Now through May 27th, you have the opportunity to attend this ground-breaking show that tells the story of American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, on the first leg of its US tour.

Or, if you want some culture with a side of sunshine, take your mom to a Giants game at AT&T Park. The SF Giants are playing the Cincinnati Reds all weekend! See the full schedule and buy tickets online.

6. Explore a garden

Exploring a garden is the perfect way to spend time with mom, celebrate springtime and even exercise your green thumb.

San Francisco’s Garden for the Environment works to the provide practical skills necessary for San Franciscans to practice sustainability in their own lives and gardens. Join them for their Spring Garden Party and Fundraiser on Saturday, May 13th and party to support sustainability! There will be wood-fired pizza, garden grown provisions, live music, local beer from Lagunitas and Fort Port Brewing Company, wine from Bluxome Street Winery as well as a farm stand and garden tours!

If partying isn’t your style, simply peruse some of the city’s most impressive gardens. Fay Park Garden in Golden Gate Park, Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden and Potrero Hill Community Garden are smaller, more secluded options for a quiet day in the sun.

But the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, Historic Gardens of Alcatraz and San Francisco Botanical Garden all provide acres of land and history to roam.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Most importantly, make sure to let your mom know just how much you appreciate her this year. And let us know how you celebrate in the comments below!
