Alamo Square

Alamo Square is one of the best parks in San Francisco. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Alamo Square, it’s located in the “NOPA” (North of the Panhandle) neighborhood. The streets that border the park are Scott, Fulton, Steiner and Hayes.
Most people know the park, because part of it faces the Painted Ladies (located on Steiner) which are the famous Victorians seen on postcards, San Francisco travel guides and, of course, on the intro to the popular TV show Full House.
One of the best times to enjoy the park is at sunset. The views of the sun setting over Buena Vista park and the western section of the city is absolutely beautiful. If you have time, walk the perimeter of the park and enjoy more views of gorgeous Victorians as well as a distinct vantage of downtown San Francisco.
There are tennis courts, a large playground/play structure for children, and half of the park is also an off-leash dog park, so it’s a great place to meet up with other dog owners.
Alamo Square truly is a wonderful park and another reason the NOPA neighborhood is a fantastic place to live.

Nick,
Thankyou for your piece above on Alamo Square. It has historical significance for my family because my grandmother lived in a tent in Alamo Square park for several days ... after the 1906 earthquake struck! She was two years old and the family had lost their home. Within the month or so, they began building a new life (literally) in Berkeley. Their home on Domingo (built by my great-grandfather) still stands and a relative still lives there!
Whenever I drive past Alamo Square I think of my grandmother and how life must have been in 1906!
