The Alta Mira in Sausalito has long been a favorite destination for tourists and locals to take in the view of the San Francisco skyline and surrounding Bay.
The historic Alta Mira dates back to the 1880s when it was first a private home for the Jackson family. In 1885 it was converted to a hotel and for years was known as one of the best places in Marin County to sit on the patio, have brunch, enjoy a cocktail or host a wedding party or event.
Jack London was known to have stayed in one of the cottages and it may be where he was inspired to write his novel The Sea Wolf that starts off in Sausalito.
In 2007 the Alta Mira was converted into a treatment center modeled after similar ones in Malibu California for those who suffer from addiction, mental health or eating disorders.
The treatment center recently closed its doors and five of the the high-end residences associated with it have been put up for sale. From the hotel owner’s residence at 100 Harrison Avenue that dates back to 1877, to the recently constructed home at 25 Santa Rosa Avenue, these residences are located in the desirable Banana Belt area of Sausalito.
These homes are truly a piece of Sausalito history.
