Muir Woods Winter Solstice Celebration

Blogged on 12/1/2009 by Sharon M. Faccinto

After the Gingerbread Workshop, another favorite event that falls during the holiday season is the annual Winter Solstice walk and bonfire at Muir Woods National Park on Mt. Tam, just above Mill Valley and Muir Beach.

Imagine strolling slowly through the dark, incense-scented woods along pathways lit only by candlelight. Luminaria line the mostly level pathways through the worlds tallest trees. There’s nothing quite like being in a quiet and dark grove of giant Sequoias, followed by a warm cider or cocoa at the bonfire back at the Interpretive Center. Night falls early on this longest night of the year, so children’s events begin at 3, with storytelling, songs and cocoa. I do it every year, rain or shine, with whomever I can manage to pry out of their warm houses. From the website:

“Activities and events include the making of solstice crowns, a stage performance of songs, stories, and puppetry, and walking the trails of Muir Woods lit by luminaria. No reservations required. The program is free. Daytime activities between 3 – 5 pm. Activities in honor of the longest night of the year between 5:30 – 8 pm. This evening can be dark and chilly; we ask visitors to bring a flashlight, dress warmly (layers/blankets), and bring a mug for warm drinks.”

Personally I have found that forgoing the use of the flashlight enhances the experience. The candlelight from the luminaria provides enough light to keep you on the pathways, but allows your eyes to adjust to the darkness. This tends to keep your pace slow and your senses more alert to the sounds of the forest. What better way to experience Muir Woods this December?
