Charter Schools Segregated? Not in Marin Btn-rss

Friday’s San Francisco Chronicle featured a story about a report that charter schools tend towards de facto segregation. It’s too bad they didn’t take a look at Sausalito’s charter school, the Willow Creek Academy. Not only is this free, public, K-8 school very diverse, it may be Marin County’s most ethnically diverse school.

Willow Creek gives priority to students from the Sausalito/Marin City School District, but they accept on an availability basis students from all over the county. The common denominator is that they have at least one parent who is willing to devote a certain amount of time to volunteering for the school and making sure the academic or homework requirements are met, such as reading a certain number of hours a week, and so forth.

As a Realtor who sells homes in Southern Marin, I’m enthusiastic about this school because it gives Sausalito families another great educational option in the public school context. Right now, Sausalito has some amazingly affordable options for families of all sizes; contact me and I’ll email you a list of them.
