Tsunamis? In The Bay Area?
Blogged on 3/1/2010 by Kristen Thompson
There have been 80 tsunamis recorded along the California coast over the last 150 years. Four of those events caused deaths. After the recent 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chile, a tsunami advisory was issued throughout the California coast.
Although it is not expected that waves will come crashing, beach dwellers beware. Owning real estate in a tsunami zone isn’t something most agents discuss with their clients. Earthquakes are supposed to be the main culprit in northern California.
There are earthquake zones, liquefaction zones, even flood and fire zones, but tsunami zones don’t appear on a natural hazard report when buying property in the Bay Area. Is this an oversight and pertinent information, or would it just give California homeowners, lenders, insurance companies more reason to fret?
