Time travel back to 1956? What a refreshing jolt of optimism!

A client and I spent yesterday morning in the rolling highlands of San Mateo touring beautifully restored Eichlers. These fabulous open-plan homes create unique environments blending indoor-outdoor spaces, simples lines, high ceilings, and walls of glass. You can just FEEL the excitement, optimism, and promise of post-war America! (Think: George Jetson and Tomorrow Land).

In response to housing demand in the post-war era of the early 1950’s, Joeseph Eichler constructed neighborhoods of affordable, modern, open-spaced contemporary homes in various peninsula neighborhoods. The Eichler Home Tour 2009 of San Mateo Highlands opened nine of these restored beauties to public view.

Proceeds for the annual tour go towards support of the local Highlands Elementary School. (Could you possibly think of a better cause)? AND, many of the home have been restored with the use of green practices, and environmentally sound building materials.
