The Marina District of San Francisco shines with brightly-colored Mediterranean-style homes, picturesque views of the Golden Gate Bridge and its youthful inhabitants. And this rooftop neighborhood is famous for some of the city’s most remarkable sunsets.
Rapid growth to the landscape of the Marina occurred following the 1915 Panama Pacific Explosion. The many stylish 1920s-inspired apartments and flats still remain in immaculate form. As the host of the San Francisco World’s Fair, the Marina District was gifted with the Palace of Fine Arts. Designed by Bernard Maybeck, its many visitors now come to experience a city favorite, The Exploratorium. Offering hundreds of exhibits in science, art and human perception, weekend adventures have become entertaining as well as educational.
There’s an endless supply of outdoor activities in the Marina. You can play catch or fly kites at the Marina Green Park, jog beside the shoreline in Crissy Field, or brace the open waters as a member of the Golden Gate Yacht Club. Home to the historic Fort Mason Center, this waterfront destination holds the latest festivals and many of the most sought-after parties. Even the Academy of Friends holds its Annual Academy Awards Gala here; the second-largest Oscar party, only to be trumped by the L.A. extravaganza itself.
Subtle details make the Marina streets feel quaint, yet the unique character of each home will keep your eyes captivated. The Marina real estate features lovely vintage details such as: parquet hardwood flooring, wood-burning fireplaces, arched doorways and entryways covered in mosaic tiles. Wandering aimlessly through the residential area of the Marina is a joy within itself.
The ever-so-popular Chestnut Street runs at the neighborhood’s center. Dense with shops, restaurants and entertainment, a constant buzz fills the sidewalks. Unique eateries abound, visit: Bistro Aix, Ace Wasabi, Greens, The Tipsy Pig, Circa, The Plant Cafe and the critically acclaimed A16. Unlike parking, shopping is plentiful. You can’t go wrong with Books Inc., Rabat Shoes, Pottery Barn, City Optix for eyeglasses, BeneFit for cosmetics, Giggle for babies, and Lucca Deli for classic Italian food. If you’re in the mood for a coffee, consider the Coffee Roastery or Chestnut Bakery. It’s easy to stay fit with the prime locations of Crunch and 24 Hour Fitness. Since the Presidio Theater and Marina Theater are both on Chestnut Street, an exciting date to the movies is just quick stroll away.
Nightlife is plentiful with quintessential Marina bars. Grab a drink and meet that special someone at Delaney’s, The Horseshoe Tavern, La Barca. But if that doesn’t work may we suggest you try the grocery store? The Marina Safeway, known to locals as “Dateway” is the shopping center which inspired Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City.
