West Berkeley was strictly an industrial neighborhood for most of its life. Attracted by its eclectic character, artists slowly started moving their studios here and eventually a creative crowd followed suit. The transformation brought several sizable retailers, restaurants and beautiful real estate to West Berkeley. New loft and condominium developments began sprouting throughout the neighborhood, resulting in what is now Berkeley’s fashionable Fourth Street.
Fourth Street features some of the best shopping in the East Bay. Of course, it features a long list of popular retailers like Anthropologie, Z Gallerie, Crate & Barrel Outlet, Restoration Hardware, Benefit Cosmetics, Aveda, Kiehl’s and Bare Escentuals. But then there are the unique boutiques such as A La Folie, Rabat, Bryn Walker, Convert, Erica Tanov, Margaret O’Leary, Jigsaw London, Mephisto and title nine. Fabulous home decor shops include: CB2, Design Within Reach, Earthsake and The Gardener. For a more refined search, head for specialty stores like EiWear, Castle in the Air, Pave Fine Jewelry, Builder’s Booksource and Flight 001.
As if there weren’t enough to do on Fourth Street already, its collection of restaurants is as good as its shopping. Residents and visitors alike can’t get enough of Cafe Rouge, Sketch Ice Cream, O Chame, Tacubaya, Zut! and Cafe M. Fourth Street is also where you’ll find old classics like Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto and Bette’s Oceanview Diner. Home of the famous souffle pancake, Bette’s has even appeared on an episode Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dines.
