Millbrae takes its name from two sources: first, from the estate of

Darius Ogden Mills, who purchased land in the 1860s from the Sanchez family, and next, from the word, "brae" — Scottish for "rolling hills" or "hill slope."

Today, the estate is long gone (it burned down in a fire drill in 1954), but the rolling hills remain and continue to serve as magnet for families looking to put down roots.

In a Word

Living Here

When it comes to easy, Millbrae wrote the book. Living here, you’ll find access to everything you need is well within reach.

  • Dining: Try Zen Sushi Bistro for its cool décor, happy hour, and central location. For great sandwiches, home-made soup, and lots of local color, Leonardo’s Italian Deli & Café is a must.
  • Day-to-day: Farther down the block is the local cobbler, the independent grocer and variety of locally owned businesses, all lending to Millbrae’s small-town America feel.
  • For fun: To get the blood pumping, take a brisk walk  through Meadows Park or go for a run or bike ride along Bayfront Park, which will take you as far as Foster City. For a more laid-back afternoon, you won’t want to miss the food, music, art, and wine at the annual Millbrae Art & Wine Festival.

Designed by famed golf course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie (of Augusta National, Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, and Pasatiempo fame), the Green Hills Country Club boasts a green belt that is the home to the red-tail fox and other animals who may not otherwise survive in the urban setting.

Bonus: The country club may well be the only area of Millbrae where natural creeks still flow overground.

Why Millbrae?

Just minutes from San Francisco, Millbrae offers a small-town feel, classic residential neighborhoods, highly acclaimed public schools, and easy commutes to the greater Bay Area via BART, SamTrans, Caltrain, or the freeways.

Millbrae features all the classic composites of the typical peninsula town: sunny most days, good public schools, commuter access and the classic Downtown Main Street, with restaurants and shopping.

The majority of its downtown restaurants are of Asian cuisine; whether it be dim sum, Vietnamese or Japanese. Try Zen Bistro for cool décor, happy hour and a central location on the main street of Broadway. Further down the block you will find the local cobbler, the independent grocer and variety of locally owned businesses, all lending to the feeling of small-town America. Oh yes, and do try Leonardo’s Italian Deli & Café, for great sandwiches, home-made soup, and lots of local color as neighborhood friends gather to catch up.

Millbrae offers small town hominess, classic residential neighborhoods, highly acclaimed public schools, and easy commutes to the greater Bay Area via BART, SAMTRANS or freeways. Further, Millbrae offers the first truly sunny climate as one travels south down the peninsula from San Francisco.

Regarding Millbrae real estate, the offerings are wide. The Millbrae BART station opened in Spring of 2003, and soon after, new high-density condominium projects in close proximity began to blossom along the El Camino corridor.
