Shangri-La in Mill Valley, a timeless home with exceptional quality and graciousness throughout.

This magnificent residence Is a Neo-Nantucket-Georgian Revival house and sits on approximately 3.5 acres. A tumbling stream passes under one end of the house, dropping into a lovely pond and flows over an old reservoir dam as a dramatic waterfall. The creek - Cascade Creek - them moves under Lovell Avenue into the Mill Valley city park of Cascade Falls.

The house was re-designed and enlarged by Padan Prichard in 1985. It has five bedrooms and 2.5 baths. A spacious living room with 18-foot-high ceilings features a carved marble fireplace similar to the one in the Doge’s Palace in Venice. The gourmet kitchen has many new high-end appliances (a six burner Thermador with griddle, a Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer, and Gaggenau oven, a Wolf convection/microwave oven, and Bosch dishwasher and a warming drawer). The kitchen opens into a generous sitting and dining area and a large deck for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining. The large master suite has a sitting area and adjoining balcony overlooking the pond. The upper level children’s wing has three bedrooms each with a forged iron balcony. The children’s bathroom is divided into three rooms – separate bath/shower, toilet, sinks – for efficient use of space. All rooms have stunning views to the outdoors. There is extensive use of custom designed, hand-made solid Cherry cabinets, bookcases and doors throughout. They were built by San Francisco’s pre-eminent furniture builder, Richard Gatti, who used hand selected and worked American Cherry.

The carved entry doorway frame is recycled from probably an 1880’s Neo-Georgian San Francisco house. The actual front door is a copy of New England doors. The exterior trim and shingles and colors used are also derivative of Nantucket and Connecticut houses. The brick in the entry walk is from the Hidden Brickworks in Vancouver, Washington founded in ab out 1860. These bricks are remnants of their last production of sand mold bricks. The copper-foil leaded glass in the master bedroom and kitchen cabinets was made by Tim Brydon of San Francisco to designs copied from English Jacobean leaded windows. Light floods into the house from all angles. Outside there is an additional large deck among Redwoods, and a fenced garden with raised beds for roses and vegetables.

The house sits on a sunny knoll with Southern exposure. The gentle and soothing environment of the house among the trees, established gardens and lively creek make this one-of-a-kind property impossible to construct today.

Although you wouldn’t know it today, there was a time when Bay Areans knew Mill Valley (so named because it was the sight of the first sawmill in Marin County) for its summer vacation homes.

But it wouldn’t be long until San Francisco businessmen, attracted to it’s easy-going nature, began leaving the City’s busy streets to make the commute home to Mill Valley. Today, just over a century later, Mill Valley is one of the most desirable places to call home.

In a Few Words

Family-and commuter-friendly

Living Here

On a warm, sunny day, there’s nothing better than venturing out in Mill Valley to find a spot overlooking the Bay where you can unwind and refresh, ride Mt. Tam, or go for a long hike.

If it’s more organized activities you crave, the City of Mill Valley is known for its fun cultural events and seasonal celebrations.

Each year, droves of people head to Old Mill Park for the Annual Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival.

If you’re a movie-buff, fall is the season for you as it marks the return of the Mill Valley Film Festival and its award-winning, international features, documentaries, shorts and children’s films.

There’s also a wide selection of fine dining, leisure cafés and on-the-go favorites, all at your fingertips:

On Locust Avenue between Sycamore and Walnut, look for a metal plaque set in the sidewalk that marks an area thought to be the 1781 birthplace of Chief Marin. Marin County and the Marin Islands are believed to be named in his honor.

Why Mill Valley?

Top-rated public schools, strong community involvement, and access to some of nature’s finest trails, parks and beaches continue to make Mill Valley one of the most sought-after communities in the Bay Area.
