More About Montclair
Known until 1958 as Monte Vista (when residents voted to change the name to Montclair due to the fact that there was another California community with the same name), Montclair’s earliest inhabitants were the Serrano Indians. In time, Spanish settlers, then those from across the United States, would come to call this area home. When land development began in earnest in the late 1890s, the area began its transformation from grazing land for livestock into a viable community.
As with much of the East Bay, a development boom that began post-World War Two would be the catalyst for even more rapid growth in Montclair. Today, with its award-winning schools, large homes, and secluded, forest-like setting, Montclair is now one of the Bay Area’s most sought-out places to call home.
In a Word
Centered along Mountain Boulevard is Montclair Village. Replete with every kind of service and amenity, some of the Village’s not-to-be-missed places of interest include Montclair Egg Shop, Chowhaus, and Toshi Sushi; specialty food shops such as A.G. Ferrari, Le Bonbon or the weekly farmer’s market; Simply Gorgeous day spa; and, for the little ones, Montclair Toyhouse.
Many of the sizable and elegant homes that make up Montclair real estate can be found in the heavily forested hills. Connected by narrow and winding roads, these properties are part of several micro-neighborhoods located within the overall area of Montclair and include Forestland, Merriwood, Shepherd Canyon, and Piedmont Pines, to name a few.
Those looking for the best that East Bay living has to offer will appreciate Montclair’s excellent schools, village-like atmosphere, centrally located park, weekly Sunday farmer’s market, storybook library, and close proximity to downtown San Francisco.
